Obama trounces Trump by 11% margin in hypothetical matchup: pollNew York Daily News — Dave Goldiner New York Daily News
May 20--If you’re scratching your head over President Trump’s effort to make Barack Obama a big issue in the 2020 presidential race you are far from alone.
In fact, the majority of Americans are likely wondering the same thing.
A new poll shows the former president leading the current White House denizen by 54%-to-43% margin in a hypothetical matchup, which is way outside the margin of error, Politico reported.
Trump came in just under 44% of those polled who said they voted for him in 2016 when given a choice with his more-popular predecessor. Obama dramatically outperformed the 46% of those in the survey who said they backed Hillary Clinton.
The results underline a paradox that political insiders have noted in recent weeks: Trump has noticeably trained his shrill attacks on Obama even though the 44th president remains a broadly popular figure.
Trump recently derided Obama as “grossly incompetent” and has tweeted daily reminders about the supposedly scandalous “OBAMAGATE!”
Insiders say Trump, beset by grim poll numbers even in GOP-leaning states, might be seeking to solidify his standing with his hardcore right-wing base, which still despises the only African-American president.
They note that his campaign is also spending big on advertising in solidly Republican areas like the Florida panhandle and western Michigan.
Trump apparently wants to rev up his base early in the general election campaign. With the #MAGA voters in line, he will then try to either convince some moderates to support him or seek to tarnish Democratic rival Joe Biden, insiders predict.
